The pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending nearly two months in captivity.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed men invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Esiele and Yawota communities, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers. The attack also claimed the life of a teacher, triggering widespread condemnation and prompting the closure of public schools across Oyo State as the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) embarked on an indefinite strike.

Their release marks the end of a prolonged ordeal that generated nationwide concern, with parents, residents and education stakeholders repeatedly urging security agencies to secure their freedom. The incident also reignited concerns over the safety of schools and the rising threat of kidnappings targeting students and teachers.

The Nigerian Army announced on Friday that the victims were rescued during what it described as a carefully planned, intelligence-led operation carried out by troops in collaboration with other security agencies in the Old Oyo National Park and surrounding areas.

The Oyo State Government is expected to provide additional details on the victims’ release. It had earlier maintained that no ransom was paid to secure their freedom.
