Kenya Clarifies Visa-Free Entry Rules, Warns Foreigners Against Illegal Work

Kenyan authorities have clarified that the country’s visa-free entry policy does not automatically grant foreigners the right to work or operate businesses in the country.

The authorities said foreigners entering Kenya under the visa-free arrangement are still required to obtain the appropriate work permits and immigration approvals before engaging in employment or business activities.

The visa-free policy, introduced in 2024 and expanded in 2025, has contributed to increased tourism and helped attract foreign investment to the East African country.

However, officials said enforcement would be tightened to ensure that visitors comply with Kenya’s immigration and labour regulations.

Authorities warned that foreigners who use tourist or investor status to operate businesses outside the conditions of their permits could face action from immigration officials.

The clarification is intended to ensure that Kenya’s open-entry policy continues to promote tourism and investment while preventing abuse of the country’s immigration system.

Officials reiterated that visa-free access is primarily an entry arrangement and should not be interpreted as permission to undertake employment or commercial activities without the required authorisation.
