Senegal Hosts First-Ever Olympic Sporting Event in Africa as Youth Games Begin
Senegal has begun hosting the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games, marking the first time an Olympic sporting event is being held on African soil.
The competition, which brings together approximately 2,655 athletes aged between 14 and 17 from around the world, is taking place from October 31 to November 13 across three locations in Senegal: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the Games will feature 25 sports and 153 medal events, making the Senegalese capital the centre of international youth sports for the next two weeks.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for Saturday evening at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, where Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is expected to officially declare the Games open.
The competition will feature events including athletics, swimming, basketball, rugby sevens, beach wrestling, breaking, boxing, judo and table tennis.
Some sports will also make their Youth Olympic Games debuts, including Baseball5, Wushu and coastal rowing beach sprint.
The Games will bring together athletes representing 204 National Olympic Committees, alongside the Refugee Olympic Team, which is participating in the Youth Olympics for the first time.
The refugee team comprises six athletes based in Africa who will compete in athletics, judo and taekwondo.
Gender equality and African representation
Dakar 2026 is also the first edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games to achieve full gender equality across athlete quotas, sports, disciplines and events.
According to the IOC, the competition features equal numbers of male and female athlete quota places, with 73 events for each gender and seven mixed events.
Senegal will also have 136 athletes participating in the competition, while approximately 6,000 volunteers are expected to support the organisation of the Games.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry described the event as an important opportunity to change international perceptions about Africa and showcase the continent to visitors from different parts of the world.
The Games were originally scheduled to take place in 2022 but were postponed to 2026 following the coronavirus pandemic.
The Summer Youth Olympic Games began in Singapore in 2010, followed by Nanjing, China, in 2014, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2018.
The fourth edition was initially planned for 2022 before Senegal secured the opportunity to host it this year.
A milestone for African sports
Senegal’s hosting of the competition comes amid growing efforts by African countries to attract major international sporting events.
The continent previously hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, while Morocco is scheduled to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
Dakar 2026 provides another opportunity to showcase Africa’s sporting facilities, cultural heritage and ability to organise international competitions.
The IOC has also highlighted the event’s potential to encourage youth participation in sports and strengthen opportunities for young African athletes.
The Games will run until November 13, when the competition is scheduled to conclude in Senegal.
