President Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill into law, marking a significant update to Nigeria’s electoral framework.
The signing ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, with principal officers of the National Assembly in attendance.
The National Assembly had passed the amendment bill on Tuesday, February 17, paving the way for presidential assent.
The newly amended law provides for the electronic transmission of election results. However, it also includes a provision allowing for manual tabulation of results in instances where network failure occurs at any polling unit.
President Tinubu described the amendment as a step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, stating, “This reform is aimed at enhancing transparency and credibility in our electoral process while ensuring that no election is stalled due to technical challenges.”
He added that the new provision strikes a balance between technological advancement and practical realities on the ground, assuring Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to free, fair, and credible elections.
