Lagos Government Disowns Controversial Nursery Textbook, Launches Probe into Viral Video

T The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has distanced itself from a controversial English language textbook for nursery pupils following a viral video that sparked public concern over alleged inappropriate content.

In an official statement, the Ministry confirmed it had taken swift action to investigate the matter after the video, posted on social media by a concerned mother, gained traction online.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has directed an immediate probe into the incident. Preliminary findings, according to the Ministry, reveal that the textbook in question is not among those approved, reviewed, or recommended for use in public or licensed private schools across Lagos State.

Authorities further disclosed that the school featured in the video is located in Ojo Local Government Area, and both the institution and the publisher of the textbook have been identified for further investigation and possible sanctions.

“The said textbook is not among the approved and recommended instructional materials authorized for use in schools across the State,” the statement emphasized, reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining high educational and moral standards.

The Ministry reassured parents and stakeholders of its strict regulatory framework guiding the selection of instructional materials, noting that all approved resources must be age-appropriate, ethically sound, and aligned with the state’s educational values.

Also speaking on the issue, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, warned school administrators and proprietors to adhere strictly to government-approved materials to protect the academic and moral development of pupils.

The Lagos State Government assured the public that appropriate actions would be taken upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
