Sanwo-Olu Commissions UNILAG Geosciences Centre, Praises Academic Advancement

L Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned a state-of-the-art Geosciences Building at the University of Lagos, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s drive to strengthen research and academic excellence.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule Akibu, performed the commissioning alongside the Group Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, Ronald Adams, as well as top executives from NNPC Limited and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board.

In her welcome address, Vice Chancellor Folashade Ogunsola commended SNEPCo for funding the project and emphasised its long-term value to the university community.

“Although the building traversed several administrations, it will continue to be treasured and effectively utilised by many generations to come,” she said.

Also present at the event were representatives of the University of Lagos Alumni Association, including National Secretary Adebayo Osikoya, alongside former National Secretary Aaron Akinloye and Acting Executive Secretary Seun Badejo.

Delivering a goodwill message, Ayolabi Elijah provided historical insight into the project, tracing its origin back to 2003 and highlighting efforts that led to its eventual completion through SNEPCo’s support.

“The journey of this project from conception to completion reflects years of persistence and commitment to academic development,” he noted.


The event was also attended by business leader Anthony Aletor, Chairman of Capital Express Holdings Limited.

Following the commissioning, the Vice Chancellor led guests on a tour of the facility, which is located behind King Jaja Hall and offers a clear view of the Senate Building. The complex features modern classrooms and advanced laboratories designed to enhance teaching, learning, and research in geosciences and geology.
