FG Reverses Decision, Says English, Maths Compulsory in O’Level Exams

T The Federal Government says English Language and Mathematics will remain compulsory subjects for all students taking O’Level examinations across the country.

The clarification follows concerns over the recently streamlined admission requirements into tertiary institutions. The Ministry of Education, in a statement signed by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, said the new policy is not a waiver but rather a measure to make the admission process more inclusive.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, explained that the policy aims to provide flexibility for students while maintaining academic standards. He noted that the adjustment only applies to specific tertiary programmes and not the requirement to sit for English and Mathematics during O’Level exams.

The government says the reform is part of efforts to modernize Nigeria’s education system in line with global best practices and promote equal opportunities for all learners.

Parents and students are advised to rely on official communication channels of the Ministry for accurate updates about education reforms and admission guidelines.
