ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike, Gives FG One-Month Ultimatum

T The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, paving the way for the resumption of academic activities across federal universities from Thursday.

The decision followed an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) held in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to reports, the suspension came after a series of negotiations between ASUU leaders and a Federal Government delegation led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed. The intervention of the Senate Committees on Education and Labour, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was also instrumental in reaching the agreement.

Despite suspending the strike, ASUU issued a one-month ultimatum to the Federal Government to fulfill its pending obligations to the union. These include the payment of withheld salaries, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances, and the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement.

The union warned that failure by the government to address these demands within the stipulated time frame would result in an indefinite nationwide strike.

“We have shown good faith by suspending the warning strike, but our patience is not limitless. The government must act decisively to honor its commitments,” a senior ASUU official was quoted as saying.

The development has been welcomed by students and parents across the country, who expressed relief over the resumption of lectures after two weeks of academic disruption.
