Drug War: Marwa Sets 2026 Operational Targets for NDLEA Commanders

C Charges them to dismantle drug cartels, intensify nationwide sensitization advocacy

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has outlined the Agency’s 2026 operational targets, charging commanders to dismantle drug cartels and scale up sensitization and advocacy efforts across the country.

Marwa gave the charge during the NDLEA’s annual review and planning meeting held at the Agency’s National Headquarters in Abuja. The high-level meeting brought together members of management, zonal commanders, state and FCT commanders, seaport and international airport commanders, as well as heads of the Marine Unit, Strike Force and Special Operations Units.

Addressing the gathering, Marwa said the Agency has begun 2026 on a strong footing, building on what he described as record-breaking successes recorded in previous years. He stressed that the focus for the year would be on deepening consolidation in Drug Supply Reduction (DSR) and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR).

“The results we achieved last year were significant, but we cannot afford to rest on our oars,” Marwa said. “Our 2026 goals are clear: we are here to completely disrupt the financial lifelines of drug cartels and ensure that every community in Nigeria is sensitized against the scourge of substance abuse.”

He directed all commands to ensure seamless execution of the Agency’s 2026 strategic work plan, noting that the gains recorded since he assumed office were a product of collective effort and discipline.

“When I first assumed office, I made certain declarations about the direction of this Agency and the resolve to confront drug barons and kingpins. Looking back, the progress achieved is the result of your collective efforts, and all glory belongs to God,” he stated.

Reflecting on the past five years, Marwa urged officers not to become complacent but to aim for greater results.

“While we acknowledge the achievements recorded during this period, we must not rest on our past successes. Rather, we must consolidate these gains and aim for even greater outcomes,” he said, adding that the Agency now commands increased respect locally and internationally.

The NDLEA boss linked the renewal of his tenure to the performance of officers in the field.

“The renewal of my tenure by the President is largely a reflection of your work. While I may issue directives, real impact comes from seizures made, arrests effected, and convictions secured,” he said. “For this reason, I sincerely appreciate your diligence, commitment, and hard work.”

Marwa further emphasized discipline, professionalism and zero tolerance for compromise, warning commanders against poorly planned operations.

“Operational professionalism and zero tolerance for compromise are non-negotiable. Commanders must ensure thorough surveillance and planning before any operation. Where operational capacity is insufficient, reinforcement must be requested rather than risking avoidable casualties,” he cautioned.

He also called for intensified advocacy efforts, especially in schools and communities, and directed that State Drug Control Committees be strengthened and made functional in all states down to local government and ward levels.

Reassuring Nigerians, Marwa said the Agency remains fully committed to protecting youths and families from the drug menace, stressing that there would be no breathing space for drug cartels in 2026.

“The strong footing at the start of this year is a clear signal to drug cartels that there will be no vacuum for their illicit trade,” he said, urging the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide useful information to the Agency.

The fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking, he added, remains a collective responsibility.
