Bandits Ambush Police, Kill Inspector in Oyo

S Suspected armed bandits have killed a police inspector during a deadly ambush on a patrol team at the Budo Masalasi Border Post in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The incident occurred when officers on routine patrol reportedly ran into the assailants, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. During the encounter, the inspector was fatally shot, while the attackers escaped with a stolen firearm.

Confirming the attack, a police source described it as a calculated assault on the patrol team. “The officers were on routine border patrol when they were ambushed by armed men. Sadly, an inspector lost his life in the line of duty, and the suspects fled with one service rifle,” the source said.

The Oyo State Police Command has since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators and reinforced security around the border communities. According to the Command, “Tactical operations have been intensified in the area to track down the criminals and prevent further attacks along the border axis.”

The killing comes amid growing concerns over banditry and violent crime in parts of Oyo State, particularly in Oriire LGA, where nearby communities such as Oloka have recently reported threats and attacks.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but vigilant. “Members of the public are advised to report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest security formation as investigations continue,” the police said.
