President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Nigerian Education Loan Fund for its role in expanding access to higher education, following the disbursement of over ₦303 billion in interest-free student loans nationwide.
The President gave the commendation during a meeting with NELFUND Chairman, Mr. Jim Ovia, and the agency’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, in Abuja.
Tinubu described the Student Loan Scheme as a transformative intervention that is easing the financial burden on students and their families while creating greater opportunities for young Nigerians to pursue tertiary education.
He specifically commended the leadership of Mr. Sawyerr for successfully driving the implementation of the programme and ensuring that the initiative reaches students across the country.
According to NELFUND, the scheme has disbursed more than ₦303 billion in interest-free loans to over 1.64 million beneficiaries, making it one of the largest education financing interventions in Nigeria’s history.
The President said the milestone reflects his administration’s commitment to investing in education, empowering young people and strengthening human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
