An 82-year-old man has reportedly been banished from Umuizu, in Okwulaga Afaraukwu Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia State, after community members accused him of attempting to bury suspected charms on farmland belonging to another resident.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 17, 2026, when residents and youths apprehended the elderly man over the alleged act and took him to the palace of the community’s traditional ruler, Eze Edward Ibeabuchi.

According to a report published on Tuesday, the man allegedly admitted to killing some of his relatives when questioned about the accusations. However, the claims have not been independently verified, and there is no confirmed information that he has been formally charged with murder.

The traditional ruler said the community, rather than the palace, decided that the man should leave the area.

“I did not banish anybody. The community banished him. The community was not happy with him,” Ibeabuchi was quoted as saying.

He added that he had questioned the man about reports concerning his alleged activities and that the elderly man admitted to killing his brothers and pleaded for forgiveness.

The monarch also expressed sadness over the development, describing the man as an elderly member of the community and raising concerns about whether he was mentally well.

Community Members Reportedly Intervened

Following the allegations, community members reportedly took the man to the traditional ruler’s palace before the decision was made for him to leave the community.

A source quoted in the report claimed that the man led some residents to locations where he allegedly carried out the acts and identified items connected to the accusations. These claims have not been independently confirmed.

The report also stated that the man’s wife and children expressed gratitude to the traditional ruler for intervening, alleging that his intervention prevented residents from lynching him.

There has been no independent confirmation of the alleged confession, the circumstances surrounding the claims of murder or the identities of any supposed victims.

Police Involvement Remains Unclear

As of the time the report was published, it was unclear whether the police had opened an investigation into the allegations or taken the man into custody.

Attempts to obtain a response from the Abia State Police Command’s spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, were reportedly unsuccessful.

The absence of a confirmed police response leaves important questions unanswered, including whether the alleged killings have been reported to law enforcement and whether any evidence exists to support the accusations.

Although the community reportedly decided to banish the man, the allegations against him have not been established through a criminal trial.

The case raises concerns about the need for serious allegations of murder to be investigated by the appropriate authorities and for any suspect to be treated in accordance with the law.
