Tinubu Intervenes Again in Rivers Crisis, Halts Fubara’s Impeachment Bid

P President Bola Tinubu has once again stepped in to halt the escalating political feud between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor and estranged political godfather, Nyesom Wike.

The latest intervention follows renewed moves by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara. The lawmakers accused the governor of alleged misconduct, including the expenditure of funds not appropriated by the House.

Recall that the rift between the two political heavyweights deepened in January, reigniting tensions that had earlier threatened governance in the oil-rich state.

According to THISDAY, President Tinubu had previously intervened in December 2023, brokering a fragile truce between the warring camps. The agreement, however, collapsed shortly after, culminating in the declaration of a six-month emergency rule in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, and the suspension of Governor Fubara.

In a fresh move to restore stability, the President has reportedly ordered an immediate suspension of all impeachment processes against Fubara, albeit with stringent conditions attached.

Multiple sources disclosed that Tinubu, acting shortly before his departure for an official visit to Türkiye on January 26, laid down clear political terms aimed at restoring peace between the two camps. Rivers State is widely regarded as politically strategic to the President’s re-election calculations ahead of 2027.

“The President made it clear that any impeachment move against Governor Fubara must stop immediately,” a source familiar with the intervention said. “However, he also delivered a blunt message to the governor that Nyesom Wike remains the undisputed political leader in Rivers State and must be accorded due respect.”

Another source added, “Tinubu stressed that whether under the APC or the PDP, Wike’s political influence in Rivers State is non-negotiable, and peace will only be sustained if that reality is acknowledged.”

The latest intervention underscores the President’s determination to stabilize Rivers State and prevent further political turmoil that could undermine governance and party unity in the state.
