NOA, NUC Move to Introduce Citizenship Studies in Nigerian Universities

T The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced a new partnership with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce Citizenship Studies as a compulsory programme in Nigerian universities.

NOA Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, inaugurated a joint committee to develop the curriculum, which will undergo formal review and adoption. He explained that the initiative is a key component of the Nigerian Identity Project, designed to rebuild national values and strengthen the social fabric of the country.

According to Issa-Onilu, the proposed curriculum will be anchored on the National Values Charter, a framework outlining the rights and responsibilities of every Nigerian citizen. He noted that Citizenship Studies already exist at the primary and secondary school levels, and the new university component will deepen civic understanding among young adults.

Speaking on behalf of the NUC, Florence Uju Onuoha commended the Federal Executive Council for approving the move. She said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to nurturing responsible citizens, promoting national unity and advancing civic education across all levels of learning.

The NOA said the committee’s work will guide the introduction of the programme as part of wider reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s value system.
