Wike Harps on Committed Leadership at UniAbuja Distinguished Lecture

T The University of Abuja on Tuesday hosted the 2026 Distinguished Personality Lecture Series, where the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, emphasised the importance of committed leadership in driving national development.

Speaking on the theme, “Exemplary Political Leadership on Infrastructural Development in Nigeria,” Wike stated that when leaders are genuinely committed to good governance and development, achieving meaningful progress becomes easier. He urged scholars, students, policymakers and young Nigerians to play active roles in building a democratic and well-governed nation.

Chairman of the occasion and Director of Organisational Support at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Professor Aminu Ibrahim Gusau, said transformative leadership must focus on delivering democratic dividends to citizens. According to him, “Only through purposeful leadership and responsible citizenship can a nation truly begin to enjoy good governance.”

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, described the lecture series as a platform for advancing the university’s intellectual tradition and deepening engagement on critical national issues such as leadership, welfare and sustainable infrastructure.

The event featured the presentation of an award to Wike for what organisers described as his purposeful leadership in infrastructural development in the FCT. The award was presented by the Dean and Convener of the lecture, Professor Mutiullah Olasupo, on behalf of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
