Nigerian Coalition Urges Government to Lead Africa in Global Peace Efforts
O
Over 30 Islamic organisations in Nigeria have united to call on the Federal Government to take a stronger stand in both domestic security and global peace efforts, warning that the country risks losing its influence as Africa’s giant if decisive action is not taken.
The appeal came in a joint statement issued under the Coalition for Global Peace (CGP) on Friday, where the groups addressed pressing issues ranging from Nigeria’s internal insecurity to international crises in Palestine, Sudan, Ukraine, and the Sahel.
While acknowledging progress in tackling criminal elements at home, the coalition said Nigeria is far from safe. It expressed concern that citizens are becoming resigned to insecurity, describing such acceptance as dangerous. The statement condemned what it termed “weaponisation of Nigeria’s security crisis” by foreign governments and some religious leaders who misrepresent the violence as a war against Christians. According to the coalition, both Muslims and Christians have been victims of indiscriminate killings.
On the global stage, the groups pressed the UN to recognise Palestine as a sovereign state, impose sanctions on Israel, and hold it accountable for alleged violations of international law. They further urged African and Global South nations to sever ties with Israel, vote for a ceasefire, and support Palestine’s admission as a full UN member.
The coalition also called for a structural overhaul of the United Nations to ensure fairness, equality, and effectiveness, insisting that no single nation should dominate global peace and security decisions.
Signed by Tajudeen Alabede of CGP, Disu Kamor of MPAC, and Dr Ahmad Jumba of DCCN, the statement was endorsed by prominent groups such as the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), the Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), and The Muslim Congress (TMC).
“We stand in solidarity with peace-loving people of conscience around the world,” the coalition declared, offering prayers for stability in Nigeria and beyond.
