Sultan Urges Muslims to Begin Search for Shawwal Crescent

T The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged Muslims across Nigeria to begin the search for the Shawwal crescent, which will signal the end of Ramadan 1447AH and the commencement of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

The directive was conveyed in a statement issued by Sambo Wali Junaidu, who also serves as Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs at the Sultanate Council, Sokoto.

According to the statement, Wednesday, March 18, 2026—corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan—has been officially designated for the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal.

Muslims who observe the crescent are advised to promptly report their findings to the nearest District or Village Head. Such reports will then be forwarded to the Sultan for confirmation and official announcement.

The statement further provided dedicated telephone lines for direct communication of verified moon sightings to the Sultan’s Office, emphasizing the importance of credible and timely reporting in determining the end of the holy month.

The announcement is in line with Islamic tradition, where the sighting of the Shawwal moon determines the conclusion of Ramadan fasting and the beginning of Eid-el-Fitr festivities across the Muslim world.
