MURIC Accuses CAN of Betraying Tinubu Over US Religious Rights Designation

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of disloyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that the Christian body betrayed the president despite what it described as his “generous consideration for Christians” in federal appointments.
The accusation follows the decision by United States President Donald Trump on Friday to place Nigeria back on the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged genocide against Christians.
Professor Ishaq Akintola, Founder and Executive Director of MURIC, in a statement on Saturday, condemned what he claimed was the role of certain Christian leaders in influencing the US decision through petitions that misrepresented Nigeria’s religious situation.
“Despite the Nigerian government’s vehement denial of any Christian genocide, US President Donald Trump yesterday redesignated Nigeria as a country of particular concern,” Akintola said.
He described the CPC redesignation as “unwarranted” and a “complete misrepresentation of the true picture on ground in Nigeria.”
According to MURIC, some Christian leaders had sent “frivolous petitions” to the US Congress, alleging that Christians were the sole victims of terrorism in Nigeria. The group further alleged that CAN failed to correct these claims and instead “amplified” them.
“It will be recalled that certain Christian leaders had written frivolous petitions to the US Congress claiming that Christians were the only ones being killed by terrorists in Nigeria. Instead of debunking this false and misleading narrative, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) simply amplified it,” the statement read.
MURIC expressed disappointment in CAN’s alleged role, arguing that the Christian body “ought to know better” given the goodwill President Tinubu has shown toward Christians through key appointments and privileges.
“CAN’s action is a stab in the back in view of President Tinubu’s preference of Christians in appointments, favours and privileges over and above his Muslim brethren,” the statement added.
