Multiple Injured as Violence Halts Paraguay Football Match

A A top-flight football match in Asunción was abandoned on Sunday after violent clashes between fans and police left several people injured at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium.

The game between Club Olimpia and Cerro Porteño was suspended in the 29th minute following unrest in the stands, where approximately 40,000 spectators had gathered.

Witnesses said the violence began after high-powered firecrackers were detonated in a section of the stadium occupied by Cerro Porteño supporters. The explosives were reportedly smuggled into the venue, triggering panic and confrontation with security personnel.

According to eyewitness accounts, some fans overpowered a police officer, seized his riot shield, and displayed it to the crowd. In response, police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the disorderly supporters, prompting hundreds of spectators to flee onto the pitch as smoke engulfed parts of the stadium.

Authorities confirmed that about 100 individuals were detained following the incident. Police stated that officers “acted immediately to ensure the safety of those in attendance.”

Security officials reported that at least six police officers sustained injuries, with one in critical condition. David Torales, a hospital spokesperson, said the injured officers suffered head wounds, lacerations, and possible stab injuries. It remains unclear whether any fans were injured.

Police added that efforts are ongoing to identify those responsible for instigating the violence, with the aim of imposing sanctions and banning them from future sporting events.

The Paraguayan Football Association stated that any team whose supporters cause a match to be abandoned could forfeit the game. Olimpia president Rodrigo Nogués said the club would seek to be awarded the three points by the disciplinary tribunal.

However, Cerro Porteño president Blas Reguera argued that Olimpia, as the match organisers, bore responsibility for stadium security.

Olimpia currently leads Paraguay’s top football division, with Cerro Porteño in second place.
