Lagos Teacher Pleads Not Guilty to Alleged Classroom Misconduct

A A 37-year-old teacher, Mukaila Ismaila, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court over allegations of inappropriate conduct involving a student.

Ismaila, who resides at No. 4 Oluwadare Street, Ayobo, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of sexual assault and administering a noxious substance.

According to the Prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, the incident was said to have occurred on November 6 at a tutorial centre in Ayobo. Ademigbuji informed the court that the defendant allegedly asked a 16-year-old student to enter an empty classroom, where he reportedly instructed her to consume an unidentified substance.

“The defendant thereafter engaged in conduct considered inappropriate and unlawful under the relevant statutes,” the prosecutor said.

The alleged offences are said to contravene Sections 246 and 263 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Section 246 prescribes a three-year sentence for the unlawful administration of a noxious substance, while Section 263 provides for the same term for sexual assault.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Presiding Magistrate O. A. Odubayo granted bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.

The matter was adjourned until December 18 for mention.
