Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Ghana Host 4th Democracy Dialogue

T The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF), in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, on Wednesday hosted the 4th edition of the Democracy Dialogue in Accra under the theme “Why Democracies Die.”

The event brought together a wide range of leaders, policymakers, and thinkers who reflected on the importance of democracy in nation-building and the challenges facing democratic systems in Africa.

Former President of Nigeria and founder of the GJF, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, expressed gratitude to Ghana’s President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and the Government of Ghana for their partnership. He also acknowledged the contributions of other dignitaries, including former Nigerian President H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, ECOWAS Commission President H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, and former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso H.E. Kadre Désiré Ouédraogo.

According to Jonathan, the rich conversations and diverse perspectives shared at the dialogue offered lessons and pathways toward building peaceful, just, and democratic societies across the continent. He urged African nations to remain committed to safeguarding democracy as a guarantee of peace, security, and prosperity.

Background on Goodluck Jonathan



Goodluck Ebele Jonathan served as the President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, following his tenure as Vice President between 2007 and 2010. A member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he oversaw Nigeria’s first peaceful transfer of power between rival political parties when he conceded defeat in the 2015 general election.

Since leaving office, Jonathan has become an advocate for democracy, peacebuilding, and good governance across Africa. Through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, he has convened dialogues and initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and fostering stability across the continent.
