Ghana Tightens Visa Rules for Chinese Nationals Amid Illegal Mining Concerns
T
The Government of Ghana has introduced stricter visa requirements for Chinese nationals, following growing concerns over their involvement in illegal mining activities, locally known as galamsey.
Under the new policy, Ghana will no longer accept group visa applications from Chinese citizens. Instead, all prospective visitors from China will be required to undergo individual interviews before being granted entry.
The measure comes after several Chinese nationals were implicated in illegal gold mining operations that have long plagued Ghana’s environment and economy.
In April 2025, the government further banned all foreigners from participating in its local gold market as part of efforts to protect the country’s natural resources and ensure that mining benefits Ghanaians first.
Despite being Africa’s largest gold producer and the sixth largest in the world, Ghana continues to struggle with the environmental destruction, revenue loss, and social conflicts linked to illegal mining.
Authorities say the tightened visa regime is part of broader reforms aimed at safeguarding the nation’s resources and curbing foreign involvement in unlawful mining practices.
