The Super Eagles of Nigeria have suffered an injury setback at the ongoing AFCON 2025, with striker Cyriel Dessers ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a thigh injury.
The 29-year-old forward has since returned to his club, Panathinaikos of Greece, for further medical assessment and treatment. Dessers, who earned his first-ever call-up to a major international tournament, did not feature in any of Nigeria’s group-stage matches as the Super Eagles topped Group C unbeaten.
Despite the development, head coach Eric Chelle has played down concerns, expressing confidence in the depth and resilience of his squad ahead of the knockout phase.
Nigeria’s attacking responsibilities are expected to rest on Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, who are set to lead the line in Monday’s Round of 16 encounter against Mozambique at the Fez Stadium.
While there are minor injury concerns within the camp, team officials insist the core of the squad remains strong and focused as Nigeria intensifies its quest for a fourth continental title.
Meanwhile, fans across the country have continued to rally behind the three-time African champions, urging unity, discipline, and concentration as the Super Eagles enter the decisive knockout stage of the competition.
