Dangote Refinery Denies Importing High-Sulphur Petrol, Clarifies Feedstock Importation

D Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed reports alleging that it imported finished petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing the claims as false, malicious, and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company explained that the cargo in question was not finished petrol (PMS) but an intermediate feedstock—a raw material used in refining processes to produce high-quality fuels. According to the management, importing and processing various crude oils and feedstocks is a standard global refining practice aimed at optimising operations and ensuring product quality.

“The cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol, and will be fully refined in our units to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards,” the statement said.

Dangote Refinery emphasized that it operates within a Free Trade Zone and produces only fuels that comply with all national and international regulatory standards. It also highlighted that its petroleum products are exported to markets in the United States and Europe, which are among the most strictly regulated in the world—underscoring the refinery’s adherence to global benchmarks.

The company further stated that all its imports are accompanied by quality certificates, which are shared transparently with regulators, adding that it is willing to make such documents publicly available to promote transparency and accountability.

Reaffirming its commitment to Nigeria’s energy development, Dangote Petroleum Refinery said it remains dedicated to producing cleaner fuels, supporting energy independence, and maintaining the highest operational and ethical standards.
