American singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.

The sentence was delivered at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, 2026, meaning Brown will not immediately serve the prison term unless the suspension is activated under the applicable legal conditions.

The 37-year-old singer pleaded guilty to affray in July, admitting his involvement in the incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, central London.

The court heard that Brown struck Diaw on the head twice with a glass tequila bottle during the confrontation. Prosecutors said the bottle was used repeatedly during the attack, which also involved Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu.

Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray. He was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.

During the sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the incident as serious public violence and warned that Brown’s fame and commercial success did not entitle him to special treatment under the law.

Diaw sustained head and knee injuries and received hospital treatment following the incident.

Brown had initially faced more serious charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Those charges were dropped following his guilty plea to affray.

The singer was arrested in May 2025 after returning to the United Kingdom, more than two years after the incident. He was subsequently released on bail after agreeing to provide £5 million in security.

The sentencing brings a significant stage of the criminal proceedings to a close, with Brown remaining outside prison under the suspended sentence.
