US President Donald Trump has attacked Norway over his failure to win the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, describing the country in derogatory terms and saying he does not want Norwegian immigrants in the United States.

Trump made the remarks on Sunday, October 25, during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, while discussing immigration and his dissatisfaction with the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to another candidate.

Speaking about immigration from Nordic countries, Trump said he would welcome people from Denmark but did not want immigrants from Norway because he had not received the prize.

He subsequently declared that Norway had become a “shithouse country”, adding to his criticism of the country over the Nobel decision.

Trump also claimed that he had helped settle several wars and argued that his contributions to international peace deserved recognition.

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to South African jurist Navi Pillay on October 9 for her work in promoting human rights, international law and international humanitarian law.

The award is decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, an independent body separate from the Norwegian government. Norway’s government does not select the recipient.

Trump’s remarks therefore targeted Norway over a decision made by the independent committee rather than by the country’s government.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide reiterated the committee’s independence in response to Trump’s criticism, according to reporting on Monday.

There has been no indication that the US administration has introduced a new immigration policy barring Norwegian citizens from entering the country as a result of the president’s comments.

The remarks come ahead of the US midterm elections scheduled for November 3, with immigration remaining a prominent issue in Trump’s political messaging.
