IGP Disu Calls for Stronger Policing to Protect Nigeria’s Orange Economy
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has called for stronger and more specialised policing strategies to protect Nigeria’s growing creative economy, warning that insecurity, piracy, cybercrime, fraud and extortion could undermine the sector’s development.
Disu made the call while speaking at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State.
The IGP said Nigeria’s Orange Economy has the potential to go beyond entertainment by creating jobs, attracting investment, promoting innovation and providing young people with legitimate economic opportunities.
According to him, the sector’s growth is, however, being threatened by various forms of criminality, including intellectual property theft, piracy, cybercrime, fraud and extortion.
He called for the adoption of a more specialised and intelligence-led policing approach to safeguard businesses and individuals operating within the creative sector.
Disu proposed the establishment of an Orange Economy Security and Intellectual Property Coordination Desk within an appropriate existing structure of the Nigeria Police Force.
He also advocated stronger collaboration among the Police, the Nigerian Copyright Commission and stakeholders in the creative industry to combat piracy, counterfeiting and other forms of criminal infringement.
The IGP stressed that policing the creative economy should not be limited to preventing violence and conventional crimes.
He said effective security should also create an environment where Nigerians can confidently create, invest, innovate and conduct legitimate business.
