UniAbuja Promotes 21 Academics to Professorial Rank

T The Governing Council of the University of Abuja has approved the promotion of 21 academic staff members to the professorial cadre, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and research development.

The promotions were approved under the leadership of the Council Chairman, Distinguished Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso. Of the number elevated, sixteen senior academics attained the rank of full professor, while five others were promoted to the position of associate professor across diverse disciplines and areas of specialisation.

The decision was ratified during the 81st Extraordinary Meeting of the Governing Council, held on Thursday, February 5 and Friday, February 6, 2026. The approvals followed the consideration of favourable external assessment reports on the candidates’ scholarly publications and academic contributions.

The newly promoted academics represent a wide range of academic fields, including clinical pharmacology, science education (physics), electrical engineering, endocrinology, Islamic studies, nephrology, clinical anatomy, dermatology, guidance and counselling, English language education, educational administration and planning, taxation law, geography and environmental management, public administration and e-governance, human resource management, financial reporting and corporate governance, financial management, political science and international relations, and philosophy.

According to the university, the promotions carry various effective dates spanning between 2020 and 2025, reflecting the period during which the beneficiaries met the requirements for elevation.

Congratulating the newly promoted academics over the weekend, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, described the development as a recognition of years of dedication to scholarship and academic productivity.

He said, “After many years of rigorous academic work and favourable external assessment, these promotions are well deserved. I congratulate the beneficiaries and encourage them to continue making meaningful contributions to the growth of the University. We expect greater scholarly output and academic leadership from them.”

The Vice-Chancellor further assured staff of the institution’s commitment to strengthening internal processes to ensure timely consideration of external assessment reports and the promotion of deserving academics in line with established guidelines.

Fawehinmi added, “The University will continue to support and recognise staff who demonstrate diligence and commitment to teaching, research, and community service.”
