Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to LG Autonomy, State Police

P President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s firm commitment to strengthening local government autonomy, advancing the establishment of state police, and promoting greater inclusion of women in party leadership structures across the country.

The President made the remarks while addressing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus at a meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he outlined key governance priorities of his administration and the ruling party.
Tinubu emphasized that genuine local government autonomy can only be achieved through direct funding, in line with recent Supreme Court pronouncements. He stressed that financial independence is central to empowering grassroots governance and ensuring effective service delivery at the local level.

“There is no full autonomy without a funded mandate. We will give them their money directly. That is compliance with the Supreme Court,” the President said, underscoring his administration’s resolve to implement the judgment without delay.
On national security, Tinubu expressed optimism that the APC-led government would successfully push through the necessary legislative framework for the establishment of state police.

He noted that decentralizing policing would significantly enhance security operations across the federation and address local security challenges more effectively.

The President disclosed that he had already communicated the government’s commitment to state police to international partners, adding that the initiative aligns with global best practices in policing and internal security management.
Tinubu also highlighted the importance of inclusive leadership, particularly the need to expand the role of women within party leadership and governance. He said empowering women remains a key pillar of his administration’s vision for national development and political stability.

According to the President, effective leadership demands reconciliation, accommodation, tolerance, and flexibility at all levels of governance, from the states down to the local governments, noting that unity within the party is essential for good governance.

He urged APC leaders and elected officials to remain actively engaged with their constituencies and to take their responsibilities seriously, stressing that the party’s majority status comes with an obligation to deliver results. Tinubu added that failure was not an option, as Nigerians expect decisive leadership and tangible progress from the ruling party.
