President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a renewed push to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through increased investment in modern policing systems, training, and intelligence capabilities.
The President made this known during the National Police Day celebration held in Abuja, where he emphasized that national progress is deeply tied to the strength and effectiveness of security institutions. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu outlined plans to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a globally competitive institution.
According to him, the Federal Government is committed to sustained reforms that will prioritize capacity development, modern equipment, improved intelligence gathering, and better welfare for officers. He stressed that empowering law enforcement is not optional but essential to national stability and development.
“Security is the foundation upon which progress is built,” the President noted, adding that the country must continue to support those tasked with protecting lives and property.
Tinubu also paid tribute to fallen officers, describing their sacrifices as a lasting legacy that must never be forgotten, while commending serving personnel for their resilience in the face of challenging conditions.
He further urged officers to uphold professionalism and accountability, warning against abuse of power. Emphasizing the importance of trust, he called for stronger collaboration between citizens and the police, noting that community-based policing remains key to tackling insecurity.
In his remarks, Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu acknowledged public concerns about policing standards and pledged a renewed commitment to discipline, professionalism, and intelligence-led operations within the force.
He assured Nigerians that the current leadership would support officers who uphold ethical standards while taking firm action against misconduct.
The event, which featured parades, tactical displays, and ceremonial processions, drew top dignitaries including former Inspectors General such as Ogbonnaya Onovo, Mohammed Abubakar, Kayode Egbetokun, Suleiman Abba, and Usman Alkali Baba, alongside government officials and members of the diplomatic corps.
The 2026 National Police Day celebration concluded with a grand parade showcasing the operational strength and evolving capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force.
