President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned the Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Ilishan, Ogun State, describing the project as a major boost to Nigeria’s aviation sector and regional economic growth.
The ceremony drew commendations for Governor Dapo Abiodun, whose administration was widely praised for delivering the landmark project and other critical infrastructure across the state.
In his address, Tinubu applauded the governor’s vision, noting that the airport represents a strategic investment capable of enhancing connectivity, trade, and industrial expansion.
“This is a testament to purposeful leadership and a clear commitment to development,” the President said, adding that Ogun State is steadily positioning itself as a key player in Nigeria’s economic landscape.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described the airport as a historic achievement, stressing that it would significantly reduce travel stress for residents and investors who previously depended on Lagos-based airports.
He noted that the project reflects a forward-thinking approach to governance and infrastructure delivery.
Also speaking, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended Abiodun’s administration for prioritising development, stating that the governor’s efforts have contributed meaningfully to economic growth and improved living standards in the state.
Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, said the airport was conceived as part of a broader plan to harness Ogun State’s proximity to Lagos and transform it into a leading industrial and logistics hub.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustainable development, highlighting achievements in road construction, housing, healthcare, and energy.
According to the governor, over 1,600 kilometres of roads have been constructed or rehabilitated, while more than 7,000 affordable housing units have been delivered to residents.
He further pointed to investments in the health sector, including the development of a 200-bed Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence, as well as ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery.
The governor also referenced the state’s 34.1-megawatt Independent Power Project, aimed at boosting electricity supply to support industrial activities.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including former Ogun governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, alongside prominent business figures such as Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola.
The commissioning of the Gateway International Airport is widely seen as a defining achievement of the Abiodun administration, reinforcing Ogun State’s drive toward infrastructure development, economic expansion, and long-term prosperity.
