Several persons are feared dead following an attack by gunmen on Anguwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday, March 29.
Residents said the assailants, who were reportedly riding motorcycles, opened fire on youths in the area, killing an unspecified number of people.
In the aftermath of the incident, angry youths took to the streets and blocked major roads within the community, heightening fears of escalating tension.
Reacting to the development, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, condemned the incident, describing it as a “barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens.”
The curfew, which took effect from midnight on Sunday, will remain in force until April 1, 2026, as security agencies intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang assured residents that security operatives have been deployed to restore calm and safeguard lives and property. He also urged citizens to remain vigilant and support authorities with useful information.
The attack has also disrupted academic activities at the University of Jos, which has a large number of students and staff residing in the affected area. The institution announced the postponement of examinations scheduled for Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31.
The incident comes weeks after at least 20 security operatives and vigilantes were reportedly killed in an ambush by armed bandits in Wanka and surrounding communities in Kanam Local Government Area of the state.
