Ramadan 2026: MUSWEN Backs Sultan, Urges Unity Over Moon Sighting Announcements

The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has reiterated its confidence in the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, in his capacity as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), amid growing concerns over conflicting declarations on the start date of the 2026 Ramadan fast.
In a statement jointly signed by MUSWEN President, Rasaki Oladejo, and Executive Secretary, Wole Abbas, the organisation emphasised the importance of adhering to the established and recognised moon sighting process coordinated under the NSCIA leadership.
The body expressed worry that recent announcements by certain individuals and groups on the commencement of fasting were made outside the accepted procedure, noting that such actions could create confusion among the faithful.
MUSWEN therefore called on Muslims in the South West and across Nigeria to remain united and avoid actions or narratives capable of causing division within the Ummah. It cautioned that attempts to undermine recognised religious structures may be part of efforts to weaken unity among Muslims.
According to the statement, believers should remain vigilant and not fall prey to divisive tendencies, stressing that unity remains central to the strength and stability of the Muslim community.
The group further highlighted the Qur’anic injunction urging Muslims to hold firmly together and avoid disunity, describing it as a guiding principle in periods of uncertainty.
Reaffirming its support for the Sultan’s leadership, MUSWEN stated that it remains committed to promoting harmony, discipline, and respect for constituted religious authorities in determining the official commencement of Ramadan.
