Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former councillor in Ibeju-Lekki, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, over alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking after officers reportedly recovered 40 kilograms of cannabis from his residence.
Olalekan, 45, who previously served two terms as a councillor representing the Orimedu community in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area and currently works as a legislative aide, was arrested on Monday, March 2, 2026, following intelligence reports linking him to the sale and distribution of illegal drugs in the area.
According to the NDLEA, its operatives carried out a raid on the suspect’s residence in Ilado community, where a search of the premises allegedly uncovered 40 kilograms of skunk — a potent strain of cannabis — concealed in one of the rooms in the house.
Confirming the development, the anti-narcotics agency said the arrest was made after credible intelligence pointed to the former local government official as a key figure in the distribution of the substance within the coastal axis of Lagos.
During preliminary interrogation, Olalekan reportedly admitted ownership of the seized drugs and the property where they were found.
“I served two terms as a councillor representing the Orimedu ward in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, and the house where the drugs were found belongs to me,” he was quoted as telling investigators.
Officials of the NDLEA stated that the operation forms part of a broader nationwide campaign to dismantle drug trafficking networks and curb the proliferation of illicit substances across communities.
The agency reiterated its commitment to intensifying intelligence-led operations to ensure that individuals involved in drug trafficking, regardless of status or background, are brought to justice.
