Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed a senior army officer, Col. I.A. Mohammed, and six soldiers in an ambush in Monguno, Borno State, on April 12.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, Sani Uba, said the attack occurred as troops moved to reinforce a military formation earlier targeted by insurgents.
According to him, the terrorists had launched an attack on troops at the Charlie 13 location on the night of April 12 but were repelled after a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Uba explained that the commanding officer, while proceeding to assess the situation at the frontline, ran into an improvised explosive device (IED), which destroyed his vehicle and led to his death alongside six soldiers.
He described the late officer’s actions as courageous, noting that he demonstrated exceptional leadership by moving toward danger to ensure the safety and effectiveness of his troops.
“His actions, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised, reflected the highest traditions of military leadership—courage, selfless service, and leading from the front,” Uba said.
“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men.”
Operation HADIN KAI mourned the fallen personnel, stating that their sacrifice would remain a lasting symbol of dedication to national service.
The incident comes days after another attack in Benisheikh, where terrorists struck a military base, killing two soldiers and two officers, including a senior commander of the 29 Brigade.
The renewed attacks highlight ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East despite sustained military operations against insurgent groups.
