The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a TikTok user, Udoma David Ekeh, for allegedly spreading false information about the commission and its operatives.
In a statement, the EFCC said Ekeh, in December 2025, circulated claims that operatives of its Ilorin Zonal Directorate had been kidnapped by bandits while on assignment in Kwara State. He further alleged that the supposed kidnappers demanded a large ransom from the commission.
The anti-graft agency, however, dismissed the claims as entirely fabricated, accusing the suspect of using his TikTok platform to misinform the public and incite distrust against the commission’s operations.
“All his claims are fabricated, together with the use of his TikTok account to incite and misinform the public about the Commission’s relentless efforts in tackling the menace of internet fraud,” the EFCC stated.
The commission also disclosed that preliminary investigations linked Ekeh to alleged internet fraud activities, particularly romance scams. According to the EFCC, the suspect reportedly impersonated a foreign national identified as “Garg Carta” on Facebook to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The EFCC added that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
