Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Ikoyi, have arrested a suspected fake lawyer, John Anoruo, for allegedly possessing and using a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Anoruo, who reportedly runs a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, was apprehended on Monday, April 20, 2026, by EFCC operatives.
According to a statement by the anti-graft agency, the case originated from a petition dated September 22, 2025, which Anoruo submitted to the Commission on behalf of his clients against the management of Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited.
However, investigations by the EFCC revealed that both the petition and a subsequent Letter of Withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, carried a forged NBA seal. The suspect reportedly confessed to obtaining the fake seal from an undisclosed business centre in Lagos.
During interrogation, the 55-year-old claimed he obtained a Law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka through evening classes but admitted he did not attend the Nigerian Law School, a mandatory requirement for legal practice in the country.
The EFCC stated that Anoruo will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
