Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to his son’s defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a personal choice.
Abba Abubakar, Atiku’s son, defected to the APC on Thursday, January 15, and reportedly pledged to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
In a statement released on Thursday, Atiku said he respects his son’s right to make independent political decisions, stressing that such choices are normal in a democratic setting.
“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal,” Atiku said.
He added, “In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect. As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.”
Atiku, however, criticised the performance of the ruling party, maintaining that his political stance remains unchanged despite his son’s defection.
“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he said.
The former vice president reaffirmed his commitment to opposition politics, noting that he would continue to work towards offering Nigerians an alternative.
“I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress,” Atiku stated.
