Atiku Abubakar resigns from PDP

F Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, GCON, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ending a decades-long association with the party he helped establish.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Adamawa State, Atiku announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect. The letter was received on July 18, 2025, by Hammedu Abubakar.

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and contested the presidency under the PDP banner on two occasions, described his decision as “heartbreaking.”

He expressed appreciation for the opportunities the party had afforded him, calling his tenure in public service under the PDP "one of the most significant chapters" of his life.

However, he stated that the party's current direction no longer aligns with its founding principles.

"I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for," Atiku wrote. He cited “irreconcilable differences” as the basis of his departure.

Despite his resignation, the former Vice President wished the PDP and its leadership well, extending his gratitude for their past support.
