Students’ leadership at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has directed students to suspend payment for tax clearance with immediate effect, citing the failure of the Osun State Internal Revenue Service (OIRS) to implement five resolutions reached with student representatives.

The directive, issued on Friday, November 6, 2026, through separate statements by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Senator Comrade Ogunmodede Oluwatobiloba Olanrewaju, and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludayo Oluwapelumi Ayobamidele, is expected to remain in force until all five agreements are fully implemented.

The student leaders said the decision followed a meeting held seven days earlier with the OIRS chairman, during which agreements were reached to address concerns surrounding tax-clearance payments in tertiary institutions across Osun State.

According to the statements, the resolutions included a revised payment structure, immediate suspension of tax-payment requirements on institutional portals, comprehensive student sensitisation, establishment of OIRS desk officers in tertiary institutions and sustained engagement between the revenue agency and student representatives.

REVISED TAX PAYMENT STRUCTURE

Under the proposed arrangement, newly admitted students in National Diploma (ND1) and Higher National Diploma (HND1) categories are expected to pay ₦11,500, while returning students in ND2 and HND2 categories are to pay ₦4,500.

However, students who have already paid the ₦11,500 charge during their first year will not be required to pay again when they progress to ND2 or HND2.

Such students are expected to obtain their tax clearance certificates and submit the corresponding verification PIN, with the SUG statement specifying a 24-hour verification period.

SUSPENSION OF PORTAL PAYMENT REQUIREMENT

Another major resolution requires OIRS to suspend or remove tax-clearance payment requirements from institutional portals, taking into consideration the academic structure and calendar of each institution.

The student leaders said the OIRS chairman had directed that the suspension take immediate effect.

They further maintained that no student should be prevented from completing registration, sitting examinations or accessing essential portal services because of the tax payment during the suspension period.

ORIENTATION AND OIRS DESK OFFICERS

The resolutions also provide for comprehensive sensitisation programmes across tertiary institutions in Osun State before the reintroduction of the tax-clearance payment arrangement.

OIRS is expected to collaborate with the respective Students’ Union Governments to educate students on the relevance of tax clearance, the applicable payment structure and the procedures involved.

In addition, the revenue agency is expected to establish functional desk offices within tertiary institutions to attend to students’ complaints, provide clarification and facilitate the processing of tax-clearance certificates.

The arrangement is also intended to prevent extortion, unnecessary delays and exploitation during the processing of students’ tax documents.

STUDENTS’ LEADERSHIP DEMANDS IMPLEMENTATION

On the fifth resolution, the OIRS chairman reportedly assured student representatives of continued partnership and engagement, with a commitment that policies detrimental to students’ interests would not be implemented without appropriate consultation.

However, the SUG President and SRC Speaker expressed dissatisfaction over the non-implementation of the agreements reached at the meeting.

Consequently, both leaders directed students to suspend further tax-clearance payments until the five resolutions are fully implemented.

They also warned against victimisation, intimidation or the denial of academic privileges to students who comply with the directive.

Faculty presidents, departmental presidents and class representatives have been instructed to ensure that the directive reaches students across the institution and report any attempt to compel students to make payments to the appropriate SUG and SRC authorities.

The SRC Speaker additionally advised students to retain their payment evidence and relevant official correspondence for record purposes.

The development follows earlier complaints by student representatives over tax-clearance charges in Osun State tertiary institutions, including allegations of duplicate payments and difficulties associated with verifying existing parental tax records.

The latest position by the OSPOLY students’ leadership signals that the implementation of the agreements, rather than further assurances, will determine when students resume payment.

Both the SUG and SRC maintained that they remain open to dialogue with the revenue agency but insisted that payment would not resume until the agreed measures are implemented.

Their position was summarised in a clear message: No implementation, no resumption.
