United States President Donald Trump has congratulated Democrats following their victories in the country’s midterm elections, acknowledging that the opposition party performed well despite widespread Republican losses.

Trump made the remarks during separate telephone interviews with CBS News and Fox News on Tuesday night and early Wednesday, after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress.

Speaking with CBS News, Trump congratulated the Democrats and expressed his willingness to work with them.

“My message is, congratulations to the Democrats, and I look forward to working with you for the good of our country,” he said.

During a separate conversation with Fox News, the president acknowledged the Democrats’ campaign efforts, saying they had fought hard.

“I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do. I think they did a good job. They fought hard,” Trump said.

However, he dismissed suggestions that the election outcome represented a personal defeat, arguing that he was not among the candidates on the ballot.

“I don’t like to consider it a defeat for me. I wasn’t on the ballot,” he said.

Trump also attributed the Republican losses to the performance and popularity of individual candidates, suggesting that some failed to attract sufficient support from the party’s voter base.

“In some cases they didn’t like the candidates, and in some cases those candidates were not my friend and the base knows that better than anybody,” he told CBS News.

The president had earlier taken to his Truth Social platform to argue that Republicans would have won overwhelmingly if he had participated directly in the election.

“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote.

The election results represented a major shift in the balance of power in Washington, with Democrats securing majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives.

The party flipped several Republican-held Senate seats, including victories in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, Maine and South Carolina.

Democrats also recorded victories in several gubernatorial contests, including Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Iowa.

The outcome gives Democrats greater legislative and oversight powers during the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency, including the ability to influence congressional investigations, scrutinise the administration and block certain presidential nominations.

Despite congratulating his opponents, Trump indicated that he would use his presidential veto power against Democratic-backed legislation he considers unacceptable.

He argued that the power could eventually compel both parties to negotiate and reach agreements on legislation.

The Democratic victories mark a significant change in the political composition of Congress ahead of the next legislative session in January 2027.
