Nasarawa Police Arrest Three After Suspect Allegedly Presents Forged ICPC ID in Lafia
The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested three men after one of them allegedly presented a forged identification card belonging to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) during a police patrol operation in Lafia.
The suspects, identified as Mohammed Umar, Mohammed Nuhu and Ibrahim Suleiman, were arrested by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit after they intercepted a Lexus IS 250 without a registration number around Bukan Sidi in Lafia.
According to a statement attributed to the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the incident occurred during a routine patrol when officers stopped the vehicle and questioned its occupants.
During interrogation, Nuhu allegedly introduced himself as an ICPC officer and presented an identification card purportedly issued by the anti-corruption agency.
Police said the driver, Umar, was subsequently questioned about the ownership of the vehicle but could not provide a satisfactory explanation, prompting officers to arrest all three occupants for further investigation.
The command said subsequent investigations revealed that the identification card presented by Nuhu was allegedly forged.
Nuhu reportedly claimed that he had accompanied the driver from Kaduna State to Lafia because Umar did not possess a valid driver’s licence.
Police also alleged that profiling of the suspects linked Suleiman to an unlawful society identified as the Eiye Confraternity.
The three men remain in police custody as investigations continue to establish their individual roles in the incident.
The command said efforts were ongoing to verify the ownership of the Lexus and determine whether other offences were connected to the case.
It added that the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shetima Jauro Mohamed, reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and efforts to combat criminal activities across the state.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements and activities to the nearest police station.
