Seven people were killed and 40 others injured when gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in southern Jordan on Friday, October 23, 2026, according to the country’s health minister.

The shooting occurred at a church in Humud village, in Karak Governorate, about 180 kilometres south of Amman, the Jordanian capital.

Health Minister Ibrahim Bdour announced the updated casualty figures during a government briefing published by the Jordan News Agency. He said two of the injured remained in critical condition and were undergoing surgery.

The attack prompted the government to declare three days of national mourning, beginning on Friday, in honour of those killed.

Prime Minister Jafar Hassan announced the mourning period, during which flags at government ministries, departments and public institutions were to be flown at half-mast.

Jordanian authorities described the incident as a terrorist attack. The country’s security agencies said investigations were continuing to identify and apprehend those responsible.

There was no independently established public confirmation of the attackers’ identities or any group’s responsibility for the shooting in the material reviewed.

The incident occurred in Karak, an area with a significant Christian community in the predominantly Muslim country.

The Jordanian government condemned the violence and called for national unity, while the health authorities continued providing treatment to those injured.

The country’s authorities have also announced restrictions on the publication of information relating to the investigation. The scope and application of those restrictions should be assessed before further reporting is published.
