The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is working on a strategic communications plan aimed at improving the coordination of election-related information and strengthening its response to misinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The initiative is the focus of a two-day technical workshop reportedly organised by the Commission in collaboration with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) in Lagos from October 23 to 24, 2026.

The workshop is bringing together National Commissioners and senior management staff to establish communication priorities, improve information-sharing within the Commission and develop strategies for engaging electoral stakeholders and the public.

According to the statement announcing the initiative, the proposed plan will provide a framework for disseminating accurate, consistent and timely information throughout the electoral process.

A key component is a crisis communication framework intended to guide the Commission’s response to emerging issues before, during and after the elections.

The framework is expected to help INEC respond more promptly to public concerns, address misinformation and maintain consistency in its communication during the electoral cycle.

Declaring the workshop open, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mallam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, reportedly described the initiative as long overdue but timely as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.

Haruna also commended IFES for its continued support for efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral institutions and the credibility of the electoral process.

The statement attributed the absence of some National Commissioners to the ongoing process of filling vacancies within the Commission, noting that the current complement of commissioners remained incomplete.

Those listed as attending the workshop included National Commissioners Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, Professor Rhoda Gumus and Professor Sunday Aja.

Other officials named were the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, and the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs Victoria Eta-Messi, alongside other senior management staff.

INEC’s communication preparations come as the Commission works towards the 2027 general elections, with its published election calendar listing January 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections and February 6, 2027, for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

The effectiveness of the proposed communications plan will depend on how consistently the framework is implemented, how quickly the Commission addresses emerging concerns and how accessible and transparent its information remains to voters and other electoral stakeholders.
