The Inspector-General of Police has reportedly filed cybercrime charges against the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Joshua Ogunwole, and two others over allegations involving the unauthorised interception of a woman’s computer data.

The two other defendants are identified as Mufutau Ibrahim and Tajudeen Opoola.

The charges, reportedly filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, concern alleged interference with the computer data and network of Dr Adeola Kehinde.

According to a charge sheet described in a report published on Thursday, October 22, the alleged offences occurred on August 23, 2026, at the university in Ekiti State.

The document was reported to have been dated October 2 and signed by a prosecuting counsel attached to the Directorate of Legal Services of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre.

One of the counts accuses the defendants of conspiring to intercept Kehinde’s computer data and its contents without authorisation.

Another alleges that they used technical means to intercept the transmission of the data from her computer network without lawful authority.

A further count concerns the alleged unauthorised modification of data stored in her computer system or network.

The charges reportedly cite Sections 27(1)(b), 12(1) and 16(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.

The defendants are also accused of allegedly abusing their offices through an arbitrary act said to have prejudiced Kehinde’s rights by interfering with her telephone and computer network.

That allegation is linked to Section 104 of the Criminal Code Act.

The reported charge sheet does not state when the defendants are expected to appear in court. It also does not indicate whether they have been arraigned or entered pleas.

The allegations remain unproven. The filing of criminal charges does not amount to a conviction, and the defendants are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proved guilty in accordance with the law.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged interception, the evidence supporting the charges and the defendants’ responses were not established in the material available for this report.

Further confirmation from the police or the court, alongside the original charge sheet and any subsequent proceedings, would help clarify the status of the case.
