The Federal Government has approved an increase in the budget for feeding Corps Members during their Orientation Course as part of efforts to improve their welfare.

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this while interacting with members of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream One at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Obubra, Cross River State.

Nafiu said the Budget Office of the Federation was aware of the upward review, adding that the improved feeding provision was expected to take effect from next year.

The NYSC boss urged Corps Members to be prudent with their finances, avoid ostentatious lifestyles and cultivate the habit of saving.

He commended the resilience and “never-die spirit” of Nigerian youths towards national service, while urging them to prioritise their safety, particularly when travelling.

Nafiu advised Corps Members not to continue travelling when it was getting to 6pm, stressing that they should break their journey and continue the following day where necessary.

“Don’t sleep in public places, don’t sleep in filling stations in large numbers, people will easily identify you,” he cautioned.

He further advised Corps Members to seek shelter in secure locations such as military and police barracks or DSS establishments when stranded, and to contact the NYSC for assistance.

The Director-General also said efforts would be intensified through engagement with relevant stakeholders to provide and overhaul facilities at the Obubra Orientation Camp.

Nafiu urged the Corps Members to add value to their certificates by acquiring practical skills that could benefit them during and after the service year.

“Learn something that will be useful to you, learn cosmetology, learn how to tie gele and others,” he advised.

Earlier, the NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Mrs Adejoke Oyenuga, described the Director-General’s visit as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare of Corps Members.

Oyenuga disclosed that 1,064 Corps Members had been registered in the camp, adding that they had successfully adapted to the regimented camp environment.
