FG Launches Mobile Learning Initiative for Teacher Development in Partnership with UNESCO, African Union

The Federal Government, in partnership with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan African University (PAU), has launched a mobile learning initiative aimed at strengthening teacher professional development across Africa.

The initiative was unveiled on Monday at the opening of a three-day Master Training Programme in Abuja, themed “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative.” The programme will run from July 21 to 23, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, the project is funded by the Government of Japan and targets five African countries — Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and South Sudan.

The ministry said the initiative seeks to expand access to quality continuous professional development, particularly for female teachers and school leaders, through flexible, technology-driven learning platforms.

The programme leverages mobile technology to address challenges such as time constraints, geographical barriers and inadequate infrastructure, enabling educators to access learning resources anytime and anywhere through a low-data, offline-friendly platform.

The Ministry of Education reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving teacher quality through digital innovation.

It noted that accessible professional development is critical to strengthening learning outcomes and building a resilient, inclusive and future-ready education system.
