Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have foiled a coordinated attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mairari, dealing a major setback to the group’s operations in the area.
The attack, which began late on December 12 and extended into the early hours of December 13, 2025, was successfully repelled through coordinated ground and air responses by OPHK forces.
During the assault, the terrorists attempted to force entry into the base using two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs). Both VBIEDs were detected in time and neutralised by troops, preventing any breach of the FOB. Security footage and field reports confirmed that several terrorists were killed in the process, while others were seriously wounded and evacuated by fleeing members of the group.
In the aftermath of the failed attack, troops of Sector 3, supported by the Theatre Command Quick Reaction Group, the Nigeria Police Crack Team, and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), carried out exploitation operations in the surrounding areas. The operation resulted in the discovery of multiple terrorist casualties and the recovery of arms, ammunition, and logistics abandoned during their retreat.
Items recovered included AK-47 rifles, magazines and ammunition, PKT rounds, hand grenades, motorcycles, communication equipment, combat gear, medical supplies, and other materials linked to sustained terrorist activities.
The two VBIEDs were destroyed by OPHK defensive fire, causing damage to sections of the road but leaving the FOB intact. No penetration of the base was recorded, underscoring the preparedness and vigilance of the troops.
Troops have since intensified aggressive patrols in the area to forestall further attacks and reassure residents of the military’s continued presence and commitment to their safety.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its resolve to decisively defeat all terrorist elements and restore lasting peace and stability across the North East, noting that the failed attack at Mairari highlights the professionalism and operational readiness of Nigerian troops.
