Soldier Kills Wife, Commits Suicide at Wawa Cantonment — Army Orders Investigation

T The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who allegedly shot and killed his wife before taking his own life at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State.

According to a statement signed by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the tragic incident occurred on October 11, 2025, leaving residents of the barracks in shock.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the soldier, who was attached to 221 Battalion, had been on duty within the cantonment before seeking permission from his superior to attend to personal matters. Moments later, both he and his wife were found dead in their apartment located at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.

“The remains of the deceased have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident,” the statement said.

The Army expressed deep regret over the development and extended condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased, praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.

Meanwhile, the Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, has assured the public that the incident will be thoroughly investigated and the outcome made public.

He added that measures would be put in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future, while calling for the continued understanding and cooperation of the public.
