Sanwo-Olu Warns Against Unapproved Coastline Structures in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has raised alarm over the increasing number of unapproved structures springing up along the state’s coastline, warning that such developments pose serious risks to lives and undermine the long-term value of the shoreline.
In a post shared on his X handle on Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that he had embarked on an inspection tour of Ibeshe, Inagbe, Ilashe, and other coastal communities, where he observed widespread breaches of planning laws.
“We observed several unapproved structures and clear violations of planning regulations. Too many buildings have been constructed without approval, in breach of planning laws and safety standards. These actions put lives at risk and undermine the long-term value of our coastline,” the Governor said.
He noted that the Ministry of Physical Planning and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) would conduct a full enumeration of the affected areas, after which the government would take “firm but fair” decisions. According to him, the aim is to regularise developments where possible, protect residents, and restore order to the corridor.
During the tour, Sanwo-Olu also inspected the newly completed 30MVA power station at Ilashe, which has been handed over to EKO Disco. The facility, once connected, is expected to supply electricity to riverine communities, a move the Governor described as “a critical step in unlocking their economic and tourism potential.”
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to environmental protection, Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of safeguarding the coastline for future generations.
“The Lagos coastline is one of our greatest assets and we owe it to future generations to safeguard it. We will correct past wrongs and work with communities to build a future that is safe, inclusive, and prosperous,” he said.
